Set Previously Set Tool — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Set Previously Set Tool

The wording is so odd. There are commands to “Set Next Tool” and “Set Previous Tool”. Currently mapped to option-PageDown and option-PageUp. You can use those keys to cycle through the tools (left tool menu as far as I can tell.)

I can toggle between two different tools by selecting a tool — pointer, then selecting another too — scissors. The “Set Previously Set Tool” command will switch from scissors to pointer and back with repeated pressings. I have mapped the command to option-shift-PageUp ‘⌥⇧⇞’ for experimentation.

The following section describes common tools available in the Tracks area and in other working areas.

Snap Automation Mode: 1/64 Triplet (1/96)

Events and time. The abstraction of note duration and interpretation is intriguing. I have seen 64th notes (hemisemidemiquaver) in scores, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 64th note triplet. The abstraction tends to break down about this point in the mapping. This is the point where I would be switching to SMPTE frames for alignment.

Snap automation to grid positions — Logic Pro X

You can snap track automation to grid positions. You can choose if you want automation to automatically use the division value chosen in the Snap menu, or you can choose a different snap value for automation.

⇧ SHIFT – ⌃ CONTROL – ⌥ OPTION – ⌘ COMMAND

While I was chasing down hemidemisemiquaver I read a bit about 128th notes on Wikipedia. This little gem was in the first paragraph. Hmmm.

Since human pitch perception begins at 20 Hz (1200/minute), then a 128th-note tremolo becomes a single pitch in perception at quarter note= 37.5 bpm.

  Open Step Editor…

Opens the Step Editor window. Time to make some MIDI.

Step Editor overview — Logic Pro X

The Step Editor is a graphical editor that can be used to create or edit MIDI note and controller data. You can use the Step Editor to view and edit different MIDI event types, shown as vertical beams—or steps—along a timeline within a region.

⇧ SHIFT – ⌃ CONTROL – ⌥ OPTION – ⌘ COMMAND

Open Display Preferences… — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Open Display Preferences…

Opens the Logic preferences window with the “Display” settings selected. There are no project specific display preferences. Use screensets to adjust windows and locations. Add things to the Transport and Tool Bar so you can toggle things like “pre-fader” metering and other useful items.

General Display preferences — Logic Pro X

General Display preferences are only available when Show Advanced Tools is selected in Advanced preferences.

⇧ SHIFT – ⌃ CONTROL – ⌥ OPTION – ⌘ COMMAND

Set Movie Region Start to Playhead — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

Set Movie Region Start to Playhead

The “movie region” doesn’t have to encompass the entire length of the video. You can set the movie region start and end in the Project Preferences — Movie section, or by using the Movie Region commands.

I have replaced the audio in a movie once. Seemed OK. I don’t do any real work with video.

Add a movie to your project — Logic Pro X

You can view a QuickTime movie file synchronously with your project, making film and TV scoring quick and easy. Although you can’t record or edit video directly in Logic Pro X, you can replace the soundtrack of a video file with music, Foley, and dialogue arranged in your project.

⇧ SHIFT – ⌃ CONTROL – ⌥ OPTION – ⌘ COMMAND
