Set Note Color By Region Color — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

Set Note Color By Region Color

MIDI notes. Audio regions don’t have notes. It would seem kind of useless to set note color by region since most all MIDI regions start out as green. But what if we change them?

It hardly occurred to me to change the MIDI region colors, but it really does make a difference when looking at an arrangement.

Just like color-coding tracks that are bused together.

It’s all about being aware of what you see as well as what you hear.

Change the color of notes in the Piano Roll Editor — Logic Pro X

You can change the color of notes in the Piano Roll Editor to display note velocity, region colors, or MIDI channel colors. By default, notes correspond to the region color.

MIDI channel strips in the Mixer work as remote controls for the mixing parameters of your MIDI-controlled sound modules and synthesizers, such as volume and pan.

New Instrument — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  New Instrument

Creates a new instrument.

What I know about EXS24 is that it is the “basic” sampler/sample player (24-bit) that provides almost all of the Logic built-in instruments.

What I read most from people who use EXS24 is that the interface needs to be changed to be more “modern”. Personally, if I compare it to the samplers I first knew about the EXS24 is just fine. Complex, of course, but that’s the tool.

The “new” sample tool for Logic is ‘Alchemy’ (Camel Audio lives!).

Not Independent — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Not Independent

It certainly reads as if it is dependent on something. Notes in a score are both visual instructions in the traditional way, and performance instructions for playback.

I guess it would be possible to move an independent third quarter note in a bar to a position before the second quarter note for visual effect, but playback would be different. Yes, an independent note will play back according to the position it has been moved to.

It is a tricky balance — score the music for someone who reads or score for playback. Hard to annotate “swing”, just like the missing sevens from chord symbols in jazz.

Contextual menu item for a selected note. Probably the easiest way to use it.

Independent notes are not tied to a rhythmic position in the staff, and can be moved freely. This can be used to add grace notes, for example, and for other purposes.

Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Nudge Value ⌥→ — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

Nudge Region/Event Position Right by Nudge Value ⌥→

Most importantly you need to know how to set the Nudge Value! What good is a nudge if you don’t know how much? There are commands available to nudge in either direction at whichever granularity you want, so you can map a key command to move by a bar or frame, etc.

You can also nudge regions (move them in small increments) left or right using key commands. To nudge regions, you first set the nudge value, then move selected regions by this value. Alternatively, you can nudge regions by a set value.
