Beam Selected Notes ⌃B — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Beam Selected Notes ⌃B

Forces a beam to the following note.

It would make sense for me to learn some of the finer points of score editing in Logic.

I originally learned to write scores by hand. Was fascinated by a “Music Typewriter”, but found it too hard. Jumped on “Finale”, version 1. Very complex. Expensive. I paid for my Finale license and made money with it by scoring parts — $10 per page by hand. Now there are far too many scoring tools to really think about, and I’m not really in the business anymore.

As an exercise I could re-create my modulations “homework sheet” in a Logic project.

By default, a note’s stem direction and length depend on the settings in the Staff Style window. You can change these attributes to improve readability; for example, to group notes meant to be played as a voice in a polyphonic passage.

  Page Setup…

Opens a short version of page setup parameter — choose the printer, paper.

When the Print command is issued a dialog box comes up with all of the settings from “Page Setup” as well as the details for the print job.

The only thing that gets printed is a Score.

Share the completed score — Logic Pro X Help

When you’re ready, you can print the score, save it as a PDF file, or export as an image using the Camera tool. The last method is most helpful if you want to export only a section of the score. Whichever method you choose, the printed score is identical to the Score Editor’s Page view display, except for the following items that are visible onscreen, but not printed:

  Open Score Preferences…

Normally I think a special command to open a particular preferences panel is kind of oddly wasteful. In this case I think it is required. Editing scores is never easy, and many of the things that could help need to be changed over the course of work. Musical Typing, easy access to publishing tools and decisions about layout is critical.

I would probably just keep the panel open right next to the score.

Score Editor overview — Logic Pro X

The Score Editor can display a single MIDI region or software instrument track. In the Score Editor, each track appears as a separate staff. Notes, rests, and other musical events in the MIDI regions on the track are displayed in standard musical notation.
