Arm/disarm tracks for Touch Automation.

I am going to try mapping Touch Bar commands to keypad commands.

There are dedicated buttons on the MCU for Automation which accomplish setting the Automation modes.

The GROUP button caught my eye — it is NOT an Automation function. It does let you control group settings and add/remove tracks from groups. The cursor pad controls which group and lets you scroll through the parameters.

Choose automation modes — Logic Pro X

Automation modes determine how automation tracks are treated. Automation is either being read or being written. You can independently set the automation mode for each track. You can also trim automation values and record relative automation data.

Touch: Plays back automation in the same way as Read mode. You can modify the value of the chosen automation parameter by moving controls in Touch mode. After the fader or knob is released, the parameter follows existing automation on the track.

I claimed that I wouldn’t use keyboard commands…

It appears that the ‘W’ key selects the Automation Curve Tool. It is highly unlikely that I will use key commands. I have set the right mouse button to show both tools and menu commands. Lots of visual reinforcement.

but I didn’t really state it well. The ‘W’ key selects the Automation Curve tool when the Tool menu is open. The proper key sequence is ‘TW’. I doubt that I would assign a whole, special key command to replace simple two key sequence.

  Delete All Track Automation

Remove all automation from all tracks. When you want to have a clean starting point for a track you would normally remove (or disable) all of the inserts, sends, and automation controlling anything.

This is a very old article from Sound on Sound magazin from September 2005 — 14 years ago. It is a nice introduction to the value of automation, and the incredible power provided in Logic. Just about everything can be automated — even changing the screen set that you are currently viewing.

It is important to read further to be clear about what Logic Pro X can do (like Track Automation and Region Automation) for just one example.

It is helpful to be able to align automation points onto the “grid” of a region. If there isn’t a grid (just time ruler) it is probably easier to create an automation point and adjust the position by entering the proper time in the Automation Event window (currently ⌃⌘E)

The Automation Event window is very useful if you are trying to figure out which fader corresponds to a plugin control.

Snap automation to grid positions — Logic Pro X

You can snap track automation to grid positions. You can choose if you want automation to automatically use the division value chosen in the Snap menu, or you can choose a different snap value for automation.

Fader notes: Faders are assigned to channels. Channel 1 is the channel main control. Channel 2 is the first insert, Channel 3 is the second insert. There are 15 possible inserts. The control values are 56 to 71. The 8 send values are 72 to 79.
