Toggle Hide Group 22 — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Toggle Hide Group 22

Hmm. 32 groups. The keyboard commands for 1 through 9 are ⌃⇧1 to ⌃⇧9 .

The commands do what I expect. If there is a group numbered ‘n’ the command toggles the view of the tracks/channels. Hidden, but not like “Hide Track”.

Groups are “mixer groups”. The overview helps us get started. It is a good thing to read through all of the sections talking about groups.

Groups overview — Logic Pro X

The Mixer groups feature is only available when Show Advanced Tools is selected in the Advanced preferences pane.

It appears that ‘Toggle Hide Group nn’ only works when the Arrange window is in front. The channel strips do toggle their visibility in all the windows.

Adjusting ‘group’ volume causes me to consider VCAs — a channel can only be controlled by one VCA, but a channel can be in multiple groups which may be able to control the volume fader.

Show/Hide Pan Knob — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Show/Hide Pan Knob

Show or hide the pan knob on channel strips. This command only works in mixer windows (stand-alone and bottom of Arrange window). If you want to hide the pan knob in the inspector channel strips (far left of Arrange window) you have to use the contextual menu to check/uncheck the Pan Knob setting.

On the topic of panning…

Set channel strip pan or balance positions — Logic Pro X

Instead of having instruments compete with one another in a mix, you can separate elements by positioning audio and instruments in the stereo mix from left to right. Typically, you want to have the most important tracks (lead vocals, solo instruments, drums, bass) positioned in the center of the mix, and have other tracks (rhythm instruments, instruments doubling the melody) to the sides. In general, most of the mix should be close to the center, with tracks panned far to the sides only for an unusual effect.

Groups appear to be very useful. I should use them more. I fooled around with them a bit to try and change colors more easily, but they do so much more.

Prior to mixing, you may find it useful to define some logical channel strip groups. You could, for example, group all drum channel strips under one drum group. This would allow you to control the group meters (volume, pan, mute, solo, sends, and so on) using a single control, while still maintaining the relative parameter values of each channel strip.

Fast Rewind ⇧, — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Fast Rewind ⇧,

I need to remember to treat Logic and its transport like I used to treat tape recorders. I certainly used to do rewind and play (or record) long ago. I am simply out of the habit.

Control playback with the transport buttons — Logic Pro X

The default set of transport buttons includes the Rewind, Forward, Stop, Play, and Record buttons to the left of the LCD, and the Cycle, Replace, Autopunch, Solo, and Click (Metronome) buttons to the right of the LCD. You can customize the control bar to show additional buttons for other functions.

Select Previous Take or Comp ⌥⇧↑ — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

Select Previous Take or Comp ⌥⇧↑

You can change which take or comp that you want to use without opening the take folder. I suspect that if you are cycling the section this would a great way to compare and contrast the audio during playback.

Comping and multiple, partial takes of audio is an alien concept for me. Splicing together different bits of audio seems un-authentic. It’s just an opinion.
