Set Right Locator by Playhead — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

#LogicProX @StudioIntern1

  Set Right Locator by Playhead

The “Set Right/Left Locator by Playhead” commands are buttons that can be added to the control bar. Some very useful documentation in Logic Pro 9 manuals describing how to use cycle modes. Skip cycle is kind of interesting.

I need to use cycle areas to create markers a lot more than I do. Define the cycle area — typically select something and use the ‘Set Locators/Loop by Regions/Events/Marquee and Enable Cycle/Loop ⌘U’ command. Grab the cycle area in the ruler and drag it down to the marker ruler. A new marker is created waiting for text input…ideal.

Set Left Locator by Playhead and Set Right Locator by Playhead: The current playhead position is used to define the left or right locator value. Also available as key commands.

The official name for the area at the top of the main window, and that which is contained in the “Transport Float” window. This does the same thing that clicking on the “Apply Defaults” button at the bottom left of the control bar customization window.

Play from Previous Bar — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Play from Previous Bar

Starts playback from the previous bar.

I think I need to investigate punch-in and punch-out. My assumption is that I could set the punch locators for a bar — say bar 12 — then use ‘Play from Previous Bar’ to start playback. Homework.

For software instruments you need to overdub.

Use transport key commands — Logic Pro X

Play from Previous Bar: Starts playback at the start of the previous bar.

Punch in and out of audio recordings — Logic Pro X

Punch recording is a technique you can use to overwrite a portion of a previously recorded track, during playback, without touching any of the recording before or after that portion. You punch in to interrupt playback and make the recording, then punch out to return to playback mode. You can choose between two punch recording modes: Quick Punch-In mode and Autopunch mode.

Overdub software instrument recordings — Logic Pro X

Overdubbing is the process of recording a performance on top of an existing performance, merging them into a single region. You can use this process to add a supplementary recorded sound to a previously recorded performance, for example. You can also use spot erase to remove any unwanted notes from a recorded performance.

Fast Rewind ⇧, — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Fast Rewind ⇧,

I need to remember to treat Logic and its transport like I used to treat tape recorders. I certainly used to do rewind and play (or record) long ago. I am simply out of the habit.

Control playback with the transport buttons — Logic Pro X

The default set of transport buttons includes the Rewind, Forward, Stop, Play, and Record buttons to the left of the LCD, and the Cycle, Replace, Autopunch, Solo, and Click (Metronome) buttons to the right of the LCD. You can customize the control bar to show additional buttons for other functions.

Stop and Go to Beginning — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Stop and Go to Beginning

Defining keyboard commands for the various stop and play commands can speed up repetitive work. I need to practice setting my transport buttons (and commands) to better match how I am working — mixing a song, segmenting a live audio session into multiple songs or chapters.

Stop and Go to Beginning: Stops playback and moves the playhead to the project start position.
