I need to use this command a bit more. When I first add tracks to a project for mixing I need to create a structural view of the song (I should, do this, I don’t often do it).

One of the early tasks I do is to strip silence from tracks which helps me focus on the parts of something like a vocal. This would be perfect for getting makers set quickly.

NB you can have multiple, different marker sets.

You can add a marker at any position in your project. When you create a marker, it can be rounded to the nearest quarter note, to the nearest bar, or not rounded.

Another of the numbered marker commands. Not happening for me. I name my markers or use the forward/backward marker commands and buttons on the X-Touch.

There are several ways to create and edit markers in Logic Pro. You can view and edit markers in the following work areas:

You can navigate through your project using markers. This is useful when you want to quickly jump to, and edit, regions or events at a specific position in your project, for example.

Why do I care? I make it a habit to create a MIDI track with a single Meta event — Project Select — that can be exported as a MIDI file. If I want to share my project with someone who doesn’t have Logic Pro X all I need to do is export all of the audio files AND export the MIDI track as a MIDI file. The MIDI file contains handy information, e.g., key signature, time signature, tempo setting, and markers!

I can provide comments or instructions in the markers which can be imported into a different tool and be properly located on the timeline.

Only the current marker set is exported to the MIDI file. If there are multiple sets of markers (I do this to provide notes to myself while listening and working, first pass, second pass, etc.) If I want all of the markers I have to make multiple export passes. I should experiment with using separate marker sets per project alternative.

The documentation only says that in some cases you get a Format 1 MIDI file and in other cases you get a Format 0 MIDI file.

If you export a single MIDI region you get a Format 0 MIDI file.

If you export multiple MIDI regions you get a Format 1 MIDI file.

If you ‘Export All MIDI Tracks as MIDI File…’ you get a Format 1 MIDI file.

Format 0 — contains a single MTrk (track) chunk of data.

Format 1 — contains multiple MTrk chunks of data which are intended to be played simultaneously.

Format 2 — contains multiple MTrk chunks of data which are not expected to be played simultaneously. I have never seen a Format 2 file in the wild.

Export MIDI regions as standard MIDI files — Logic Pro X

You can export one or more MIDI regions as standard MIDI files, to play in another music app. If your project contains only MIDI regions, you can merge the regions and export the entire project as a MIDI file. Before exporting, you need to perform several steps to prepare the MIDI regions.

Opens the current marker for text editing. Whatever you type will replace the current text. Exit editing mode by typing an ESC (⎋) or a return. You can easily create markers and leave notes during playback by using the Create Marker (⌥’) — option-singleQuote — command followed by Rename Marker. Sometimes I find it hard to type the notes while playing, but it is an excellent way to note points in a mix where something needs attention.

  Go to Next Marker And Set Locators ⌥.

Move to the next marker (you did make markers, didn’t you?) and set the locators. This makes it easy to move to the next section of the project and have the transport all ready for work.

I don’t use markers well enough. I should remember my piano training (Dr. Erlings) and do the 50,000 ft overview followed by finding the sections of the project. Set the markers to help make sense of things.

I need serious work in identifying song structure in the current world of music.
