Find Original of Alias — Logic Pro keyboard command of the day

  Find Original of Alias

Locate the original region that this aliased region points to. Note that an aliased region has visual indicators (just like aliases of files) that help you identify them.

Create MIDI aliases in Logic Pro — Apple Support

If you forget where the original or source region is for a certain alias, you can search for it. In Logic Pro, do one of the following:

  • Select the alias, then choose MIDI > Alias > Select Original (or use the Find Original of Alias key command).
  • Choose Functions > Region Alias > Select Aliases of Region.

Aliases can be useful when you want to repeat a phrase or riff in different parts of an arrangement. If you make changes to the original region after creating aliases from it, the changes apply to all its aliases throughout the project. If you want to edit one of the aliases without changing the others, you can turn that alias into an independent region (a region copy) and edit it independently.

Selects all aliases of the currently selected region.

Create MIDI aliases in the Logic Pro Tracks area — Apple Support

You can create an alias for a MIDI region or a folder. An alias is a reference to a region, and looks similar to a normal region in the Tracks area. If you alter the original region, all aliases of the region are similarly altered.

To perform some edits on regions, you must first select the regions. You can select one or multiple regions, select regions on different tracks, and quickly select muted regions, overlapped regions, or regions meeting other criteria. Selected regions appear brighter in the Tracks area than unselected regions.

NB When making aliases it is important to make sure that Preferences/General/Editing:’Select regions on track selection’ is not checked. That way you can select a region, select a track, move the playhead, and create the alias in that spot. It is probably a good idea to create a keyboard shortcut for the command ‘Toggle Select Regions on Track Selection’.

Delete All Orphan Aliases — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Delete All Orphan Aliases

Deletes orphaned aliases. An orphaned alias is an alias (looks like a MIDI region) to a MIDI region. If the original region is deleted, and you have Logic keep the aliases around, you will have orphaned aliases.

I created an alias, deleted the original region, then unsure the ‘Delet All Orphan Aliases’ command. There is, apparently, no undo of this action.

Aliases do have some differences from their “parent” region: you can give each alias its own name, and edit region parameters for each alias independently.

Alias names appear in italics to distinguish them from normal regions. If you name an alias, its parent region name is shown below the alias name (provided that the zoom level is adequate).

Make Alias but Copy Folder — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Make Alias but Copy Folder

I am not sure of the subtlety of copying the folder vs. simply making an alias.

There can be huge benefit to using aliases for recurring parts in a song. Change the original, the alias follows along. It is also quite easy to use the same part, but transposed, using an alias. Logic for the win.
