  Toggle Automation Quick Access ⌃⌥⌘A

This is handy. When Automation Quick Access is “on” I can use the selected controller (buttons on my nanoKEY) to adjust selected automation. Nice to know.

Write track automation with external controllers — Logic Pro X

The Automation Quick Access (AQA) feature makes track automation extremely fast and simple if you only have one hardware MIDI controller available—one fader on your MIDI keyboard, or just the modulation wheel, for example. You can use this single hardware controller to automate the currently active automation parameter of the selected track in the main window.

Ensemble effect — Logic Pro X

Ensemble effect — Logic Pro X

Ensemble can add richness and movement to sounds, particularly when you use a high number of voices. It is useful for thickening parts, but you can also use it for strong pitch variations between voices, resulting in a detuned quality to processed material. Ensemble combines up to eight chorus effects. Two standard LFOs and one random LFO enable you to create complex modulations. The graphic display represents the modulation rate and intensity of all LFOs and lets you directly adjust waveforms.

I was discussing forcing low-end into mono, centered in a mix. Sometimes it works.

I decided to look at modulation effects and noticed ‘Ensemble’. This thing is outstanding. Really wakes things up. I need to do a deep dive into the built-in effects that Logic provides. My little homework MIDI song provides a great test bed. The bass really gets entertaining.

Set Right Locator numerically… — Logic Pro X keyboard command of the day

  Set Right Locator numerically…

The locators are your friend. How can I set thee? Let me count the ways…

I use buttons on the control bar to set locators, and have been trying to train myself to use the ‘Set Locators by Regions/Events/Marquee and Enable Cycle — ⌘U’, but sometimes setting the position numerically might make sense.

NB the ‘Set Locator numerically’ command opens a modal dialog — nothing else can be accomplished until the dialog is dismissed.

Reset All Preferences Except Key Commands…

This is good to know. Deleting preference files is a drag. You never know what little thing might be lurking there.

I wish there was a “Save All Preferences” command as well.

This should be included in the standard debugging litany, just before the “re-install” which *won’t* reset preferences.

How to Make Your Kick Drum Go Boom

How to Make Your Kick Drum Go Boom

by DJ Pangburn, iZotope Contributor May 28, 2019

Learning how to give a kick drum a greater depth and boom takes time and effort. It’s just not something that comes right away, unless one happens to be a naturally born electronic music or hip hop producer.

I like learning how to get different sounds with step-by-step exposition of what is going on and how things affect the sound.

I recently purchased

Sasquatch Kick Machine 2 | Boz Digital Labs

Sasquatch 2 is a CPU-friendly kick drum enhancement plug-in that enables you to custom-tailor the sound of any kick drum, acoustic or electronic, with exhaustive creative possibilities, ranging from subtle to extreme and beyond.

which gets to booming kick drums (and then some) in short order. Great fun working on interesting sounds.
